Compress Passport Photo to 100 KB

Preset and ready: drop a file and the output lands under 100 KB as JPEG — processed entirely in your browser.

Why this exact limit matters

One hundred kilobytes is the top of the Passport Seva band (20–100 KB) and loose change for UPSC (20–300 KB) and the NTA exams (10–200 KB). Aiming at a band’s ceiling sounds aggressive, but the tool lands just under your number — so a 100 KB target here yields a file that passes Seva today and keeps maximum quality for any portal that displays the photo larger than a thumbnail.

Official systems validate mechanically, so hitting just under the stated kilobyte ceiling — without going below useful quality — is exactly what a target-driven compressor should do. 100 KB is a moderate limit, common for application portals, and this page is preset to exactly that ceiling.

How to compress to 100 KB

  1. Drop your image into the box above — it stays on your device.
  2. Confirm the target: under 100 KB as JPEG.
  3. The MozJPEG encoder searches its quality range so the JPEG output lands just under your limit. Dimensions are left at their original size unless the target demands otherwise.
  4. Preview the result, compare it with the original if you want, and download — the filename carries its actual size.

Tip: Passport-style photos compress much better when the background is plain and evenly lit; a busy background forces the encoder to spend bytes on detail nobody needs.

Measured: 100 KB in the passport frame

The same 914 KB portrait test file, this time with a 100 KB ceiling and the 413×531 passport box applied:

Source file

914 KB

1500×1800 JPEG

Output

96.8 KB

9.4× smaller

Quality setting

q91

near-lossless

Resolution

413×496

frame-fit portrait

Quality 91 is indistinguishable from the original at passport size — at 100 KB the encoder simply runs out of ways to improve the image inside this frame. That is the practical ceiling for document photos: beyond it, extra kilobytes only buy pixels you will never display.

The bands that end at or above 100 KB

From the 2025–26 cycles. Aiming at the top of a band is only safe when the tool guarantees under-target output — quality sliders in ordinary editors do not, which is exactly how borderline files get rejected.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any downside to using the whole 100 KB budget?

Only if a re-upload step recompresses the file — a preview or cropping screen in a portal sometimes re-saves your photo, and quality 91 gives it clean material to work with. Starting at 96 KB leaves no room to exceed the ceiling after such a re-save.

Seva says minimum 350 pixels wide — does 413×496 cover that?

Yes, 413 pixels wide clears the 350 floor with margin. The tool never enlarges, so start from a photo larger than the frame; the cap then brings it down without ever dipping below the floor.

Can I use this same file for the printed photo requirement?

Seva also asks for printed 3.5×4.5 cm photos, but those come from a photo studio or printer, not from your upload file. The uploaded JPEG is for identity verification in the system.

Is it safe to compress my passport photo online?

This tool never uploads your photo. Decoding and encoding happen inside your browser, no file is transmitted anywhere, and closing the tab erases everything. For identity documents that privacy matters more than convenience.

How does the tool hit the exact JPEG size?

It encodes your image with the MozJPEG encoder several times, binary-searching the quality setting until the output lands just under your limit — then keeps that best result.

What happens to my image when I close the tab?

It is discarded from memory. Nothing was transmitted and nothing was stored, so there is nothing to delete.
